How One Encounter Ignited a Town
When reading John 4:27–42, it is easy to focus only on the miracle at the well. But if you look closer, this passage reveals a profound shift in how Jesus sees people—and how an encounter with Him changes everything.
1. A Savior Who Crosses Boundaries (v. 27)
“Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman…”
In some translations, like the ESV, the word “surprised” is translated as “marveled.” I love that phrasing. It refers to being filled with awe—completely amazed by Jesus Christ.
Here was a Jewish Rabbi speaking directly to a Samaritan woman. To the culture of that day, she was from the lowest caste of society—an outcast, unacceptable to most. Yet Jesus saw her as worthy of His attention. In fact, He went out of His way to meet her.
The disciples were blown away by His attitude. But this is who Jesus is: the chain-breaker, the heart-healer, and the breaker of tradition.
2. A Bold, Forgetful Faith (vv. 28–30)
Filled with awe, wonder, and the love of Christ, the woman completely ignored the subtle judgment of the disciples. She had something far greater in her heart than dealing with hurtful questions.
In her excitement, she forgot her physical task—and her water jar—and ran into town to proclaim the good news of Jesus:
“Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?”
She became an instant evangelist, demonstrating how we, too, should live when we encounter the Savior.
3. Divine Energy and the Joy of the Harvest (vv. 31–38)
When the disciples urged Him to eat, Jesus gave a classic, unexpected response:
“I have food to eat that you know nothing about.”
Naturally, the disciples were confused. A mind set on the physical cannot easily grasp the spiritual. Jesus explained that His true food was to do the will of God and complete His work.
I’ve experienced a taste of this myself. My personal calling is evangelistic, and every time I step out to use that God-given gift, I feel instantly energized. The overwhelming joy isn’t just for me, either—it touches the people I share with, and it often fills other believers with a fresh passion to share their faith.
I used to wonder how a small group of eleven disciples could evangelize the known world. But the Holy Spirit is contagious. When people are touched by the Spirit in power, they simply cannot keep it to themselves. That was exactly what happened to the woman at the well: “I have to go now and share what I’ve seen.”
4. A Town Transformed (vv. 39–42)
The townspeople became curious after hearing her declare Jesus in the streets. They came out to see Him, invited Him to stay for two days, and listened for themselves.
What an incredible celebration—almost an entire town repented and followed Christ! They experienced what I can only describe as a spiritual high, declaring:
“We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”
Hearing Him for Yourself
Perhaps you want to hear the voice of Christ today. You don’t have to wait for a crowd at a well. You can:
- Open the Bible and read His words.
- Pray for understanding, asking Him to speak to your heart.
- Ask for forgiveness and accept Jesus as your personal Savior.
May your joy be as full as the people of that Samaritan town!
God bless.
